How Julie Flett’s Background Influences Her Technique
Flett’s cultural heritage impacts the way that she chooses new projects. She uses each project as a way to further explore her connection to the community (Paper Tigers, 2012). She is primarily Cree-Métis, but also draws inspiration from traditional Inuit printmaking design (Cerny, 2014). Flett’s background in art and design also shows through in her work. As a child, Julie spent time in her mother’s weaving shop, learning about the various textiles (Clare, 2014). This lead her to study textiles art at Alberta College of Art and Design and is evidenced in her use of textiles and fabrics in her collage illustrations (Flett, 2015). Many of her illustrations are based on memories or photographs from personal experience (Clare, 2014).
