Dolphin SOS
Based on actual events, Dolphin SOS is the story of a town that came together to rescue dolphins trapped by the ice. Depicted mostly in shades of gray, small strokes of color pop off the page and highlight important images. The interior of the house utilizes more vibrant colors, signifying a warmer atmosphere than the harsh winter outside. The front end paper depicts a snowy night scene, setting the mood for the tumultuous start of the story. The final end paper shows the sun shining over the same landscape, signifying that the trouble is over.
Flett uses fabric collage and digital manipulation to create interesting patterns in the wallpaper and clothing of the characters. She uses black paint to create the water of the cove. In many scenes, the dark lines of the water are beneficial to break up the monotonous expanse of the pale sky and snowy ground. These large white areas give a feeling of helplessness as the dolphins get trapped farther and farther away from the open sea.
